True Colors

Show your true colours : Phrases

Meaning:
To reveal your true intentions, personality, or behaviors.

Origin:
Colour(s) has numerous meanings. An early use of the word is flag, pennant, or badge.

Early warships often carried flags from many nations on board in order to elude or deceive the enemy. The rules of civilized warfare called for all ships to hoist their true national ensigns before firing a shot.

Someone who finally shows his true colours is acting like a warship which hails another ship flying one flag, but then hoisted their own when they got in firing range.

There has always been deceit and betrayal in the world. In my personal opinion, the reason it seems there is more now is because we are living in an age never seen before where there are a wide range of opportunities for an individual to be deceptive as well as to be deceived.

We have all met people who we thought were a certain type of person only to find out later they are not who we thought they were. We become angry and bitter due to the hurt of being betrayed, lied to, and deceived. What about the ones who never lied about who they were? We still become hurt because we allowed ourselves to be taken advantage of even though we saw the signs of who they actually were.

I put the information about the flags at the beginning of this writing because, to me, that is the ultimate betrayal; pretending to be something one is not in order to get close enough to attack. Is that not how the enemy works? The important factor is having discernment given by Holy Spirit to see the true colors of every vessel that approaches us and always having our (believers in Jesus Christ) true colors up.

Matthew 24:4-8 – And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

If we see the enemy approaching, we can halt his plans before an attack. The only way to see him approaching is to be on guard. The only way to be on guard is to know who we are in Christ and Who Christ is in us.

Matthew 24:13 – But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

Ladies and Gentleman, “hoist the colours high”. Let your true colors fly in the wind on the sea of God’s mercy and love. Let no one take away who you are or who you were created to be; including yourself. Do not allow your doubts and fears to overtake the truth of your identity. Let your true colors fly high for everyone to see. Allow Holy Spirit to show you others’ true colors whether they are hidden or not.
