Be Fruitful and Multiply
February 10, 2016
Most of us know this word from the Lord very well. He spoke it multiple times in the beginning of Genesis. How deep does this word actually go? Our God is so vast and so massive that we have only begun to dig through the surface structure of our Lord. I will present to you another way to think of this word our Almighty God spoke over creation. To set the foundation there are a few things we must come to understand:
1 Corinthians 15:46-49 – However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. 47 The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. 48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. 49 And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man.
John 4:21-26 – Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”
I don’t know if you have noticed while reading the Bible but things always happen in the natural realm before taking place in the spiritual realm. God orchestrated this by design. When He says “Be fruitful and multiply” He means much more than just having children in the natural. This also denotes a spiritual meaning. Just as children take after parents in appearance, behaviors, and attitudes so it is spiritually. Just as children grow and mature and develop their own personalities and way of life so it is to be in the spiritual.
“Be fruitful…” This is the first part of the command. This just keeps ringing in my spirit. We are called to be fruitful. What does that mean? Before I get into that let us look at something else God said during creation.
Genesis 1:11-13 – Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 So the evening and the morning were the third day.
If He said that of the earth, grass, and fruit tree how much more does it apply to us; “…yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth…” Interesting right? What does this mean for us? (Side Note: Do you think it is coincidence God did this on the third day and Jesus rose on the third day?)
Matthew 7:15-20 – “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
Matthew 13:22-23 – Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. 23 But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”
John 15:1-8 – “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
Spiritually speaking, when we bear the fruit of God’s Kingdom we are to multiply it just as in the natural we are called to be fruitful and multiply and subdue the earth. It is the same spiritually. We are to bear the fruit of the Kingdom and multiply it in one another. We are to cut down that which does not bear fruit spiritually (this means within ourselves first). The fruits of the Kingdom of Heaven by the Spirit are:
Galatians 5:22-26 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
The fruits that are bad and spoil the harvest are:
Revelation 21:8 (KJV) – But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
(AMP) – But as for the cowards and unbelieving and abominable [who are devoid of character and personal integrity and practice or tolerate immorality], and murderers, and sorcerers [with intoxicating drugs], and idolaters and occultists [who practice and teach false religions], and all the liars [who knowingly deceive and twist truth], their part will be in the lake that blazes with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
Allow our Lord by Holy Spirit to prune you. Allow Him to cut the dead things away so you can be fruitful and multiply that fruit in others. So that His plan and purpose can be here on earth as it already is in Heaven. Here is a link I found during the course of writing this word that will help expose some areas of incorrect thinking we have as the Body (us individually first which seeps into the corporate Body). Be fruitful in the things of our Lord and multiply!
